Strong Families

Stabilizing and Supporting Families in Need

The Commission recognizes the importance of the family as each child’s first teacher and the primacy of families for positive child development. The programs included under Strong Families focus on providing supportive service to families, particularly those most at risk for poor outcomes for their children.

The economic crisis created an increased demand for homeless services. The number of preschool and kindergarten students who have been identified as homeless or unstably housed has grown. When looking at families with school-aged children, the trend of families relying on motels, shelters, or unsheltered as a nighttime residence has increased.

Helping homeless families and families at risk for homelessness has translated into funding for a number of programs. For more about the programs the Commission supports, please visit
